Early Motherhood Projects | Lake County IL

Mommy and me!-14.jpg

I have been working on a early Motherhood Project and it is not complete, but I would like to start sharing some of the woman’s stories who were a part of the project. I wanted to do this because I think moms often feel alone and I would love for there to be more awareness of what moms are experiencing and to what extent.

Because it is only fair, I will start with my motherhood experience first and then share all the other woman’s stories in the weeks to come.

My motherhood experience that is not talked about enough is postpartum depression.

Postpartum Depression.

It is insane that this topic is even taboo anymore. It affects so many women and families. It is occurring across all races and socioeconomic status’. I have seen so many new moms ask why this isn’t talked about more. I for one, think there should be more information in place to help prepare moms for what to expect. There should be more information on its long term affects if it’s not treated properly.

One recent study found 1 in 7 women may experience postpartum depression in the year after giving birth. That statistic equates to 600,000 women in the United States. But that statistic is believed to be inaccurate. Many articles have recently been written and are sharing that women are not being accurately diagnosed or their postpartum depression is unreported. Because of this, is it actually thought that the statistics are double the amount stated. In that case it would be 2 in 7 woman(1,200,000 women) that will experience postpartum depression. Those numbers only include mothers who have given birth to live children. When we add women who have miscarried or have had a stillbirth that brings us up to around 1,500,000 a year.

On top of that, even when women are diagnosed with postpartum depression some of them are still not provided with the services that they need. If postpartum depression is not properly treated, it can last for months or even years.

My story.

I was one of the women that was not diagnosed, so I am not a part of the statistics above. I believe I had postpartum depression with my first born. She was an unplanned pregnancy and if you look at the risk factors of postpartum depression, an unplanned pregnancy is on that list. I had a very hard time taking care of her at times, but never admitted it then because I didn’t want to be titled a “bad mom”. I also think it is hard to recognize depression because a person that is depressed may experience many emotions outside of sadness.

I had postpartum depression after our fourth child’s birth as well. “This is not surprising since a woman that has experienced postpartum depression with previous births is 10-50% more likely to experience it with following births.” I had a couple of hard things happening during that time that I think created the perfect storm. We were having marital issues during the pregnancy, my mom moved away and there was a very small age gap between our third and fourth child. I got pregnant when our third child was 9 months old, so he was 18 months old when the baby was born. I remember when I found out I was pregnant I said, “I am not breastfeeding this baby”. I had stopped breastfeeding our third child a month prior to finding out I was pregnant and I was not ready to do it again. Luckily, those 7 remaining months were enough of a break where I was able to do what is so important to me and breastfeed again!

My two year old is about to be 3 in April and about 6 months ago I asked God what needs to change in my life and what responsibilities do I need to get rid of. I was in an interesting place in life. I was overwhelmed. I dreaded picking up my kids from school. Not because they overwhelm me, but because of all the stressful things that needed to take place in order to have a functional and healthy home. I had to do homework with two kids(one has a hard time focusing and was falling behind in school), choir, dance class, tutoring, cooking a well balanced dinner, and getting them in bed by 7 all while being a loving and kind parent. It was a lot.

Throughout all of this, I have learned that it is possible for one of my greatest joys can bring so many stressors. My children are so special and I am tremendously blessed and yet I could not shake the feeling of being overwhelmed by the responsibilities that come along with having children. Thankfully, I have made the changes that God guided me to make and I have had so much freedom. Some of the changes that I made that have been incredibly helpful were I stopped homeschooling my daughter and I stopped working for about 4 months and focused on self care and my relationship with God. Since making these changes, I still have days where I am overwhelmed, but I no longer feel trapped or hopeless.

I loved photographing Jaclyn. She was truly a snow queen! It was 7* and she did such a good job at not allowing the cold to get to her. Super impressive! We made sure this session was quick, but while it lasted Jaclyn was super accommodating so we were able to capture the images we needed.

Elsa’s lyric that are fitting:

Let it go, let it go
I am one with the wind and sky
Let it go, let it go
You'll never see me cry
Here I stand and here I stay
Let the storm rage on

My power flurries through the air into the ground
My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around
And one thought crystallizes like an icy blast
I'm never going back, the past is in the past

Let it go
The cold never bothered me anyway
Let it go, let it go
And I'll rise like the break of dawn
Let it go, let it go
That perfect girl is gone
Here I stand in the light of day
Let the storm rage on

Tropic Fun!| Illinois Maternity Photographer

I had a wonderful time this past weekend capturing Allie. She is a complete natural and we had a fun time exploring the greenhouse. It is so satisfying to go and explore somewhere new. We walked all over to find the perfect little niches. I truly love working with mom's that trust my artistic eye and are open to trying just about anything! I am going to be traveling to Colorado and Arizona this year and I am so excited to have a similar experience and vibe. I can't wait to humbly take expecting couples images among Colorado's mountains and Arizona's cacti and shrubs!
